Homeless Activists Coming Together
On June 24, Mobilize led a strategy session for about 25 local activists representing 3-4 different groups who work on homeless issues in our community. It was terrific. What a great bunch of people! Mobilize’s aim was to align activists’ goals so that all of us could zoom in on 1-3 goals to pursue and fulfill. And we did it. Here’s what emerged from our first 3-hour meeting:
1. A group to focus on and campaign hard for bathrooms in Chico that are open, accessible, and safe, 24/7.
2. A group to focus on the declaration of a shelter crisis.
3. A third goal to hammer out more specifically and get to work on: the right to rest / legal camping.

We need all the support we can get. Because humanity matters. Just because you might be homeless doesn’t mean you don’t have rights or deserve dignity.

This group is meeting again in August to report back on progress, solicit more support, and start working on Goal #3. If you’d like to get involved with any of this–on a specific goal or to attend the meeting in August, please email mobilizechico@gmail.com and we will get you the information.

Protest Immigration Policies and Horrors on Wednesday

A demonstration to protest the U.S. administration’s continued incarceration of children and separation of families, and to demand reunification of children with their parents, is set for Wednesday afternoon, June 27, from 4-6 pm at the office of Congressman Doug LaMalfa, 2862 Olive Hwy, Suite D in Oroville. We demand that Congressman LaMalfa co-author or support legislation that directs the government to use every method available to assure that children are reunited with their families as quickly as possible. Reunification is clearly a non-partisan, human rights issue that has a broad base of support in Congressional District 1. For more information, contact the organizers: Heidi Jones-Blanchard (530) 513-9710, or Scott Huber (530) 321-5579.

Dinner for Desmond: July 28, 5-7

Justice for Desmond Phillips is launching a new season of Dinner for Desmond with a family BBQ. Come to One Mile and join them for burgers and hotdogs (provided) and bring your favorite side dish or dessert. There will be activities for kids, as well as use of the swing set, park, and pool nearby. They will have entertainment and more good community, including an update on Desmond’s case with the Attorney General and more discussion on how to build a community that is safe from police violence. Bring a dish to share, a blanket or chair to sit on if you prefer, and yourself, your family, friends and neighbors.
